Eastern Wild West, Highest Border of the World – Xinjiang starting at Xinjiang, China

Xingjiang - a land of contrast, split between snow-capped mountains and desert basins, bordering eight countries—Mongolia, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, and the disputed territory of Kashmir. It’s also culturally split between the Uighurs (45%) and Han Chinese (40%), with other minorities contributing to a medley of forty different ethnic groups. But no worries, foreign passport holders are very welcome here!

Let's pass the usual tourist attractions but shoot for the extreme west of China and the Southwest extreme of Xinjiang, Kashgar,  immense in the stunning sites around the area.

- Kashgar - Once the busiest stop along the Silk Road
An ancient oasis located between the Taklamakan desert and the Karakorum mountain range. Kashgar is the departure point of the Karakorum highway follows the old Silk Road route between China’s Xinjiang Province and Pakistan’s Gilgit–Baltistan region across the Karakorum. It’s the highest paved international road in the world as the Khunjerab Pass reaches an altitude of 4,693 meters.

- The Khunjerab Pass - Highest border of the world
This is the only friendly border in Pakistan with China, also a remarkable place to see wildlife possesses considerable population of Ibex and snow leopard.

Soak up the awesome mountain views along the way with yaks and orange marmot grazing. Remember to bring camera for shot with the only friendly border Security Guards of both Chinese and Pakistanis for memorable collection.

- Taklamakan Desert, China's other desert, is the second largest desert in the world with nickname " the Sea of Death". This is also one of the largest sandy deserts in the world, ranking 15th in size in a ranking of the world's largest non-polar deserts....and yes, let's go Camel Trekking...
Into Yarkand, once the home of a powerful Uyghur kingdom

- Karakul lake is a pristine and scenic alpine lake at 3000m elevation where we would spend a night in a Kyrgyz yurt for experience, and a night in a nearby Inn.

Karakul Lake is often called the “black lake”. However the water is actually crystal clear. At this high altitude, the sky is a deep blue color – and water is a reflection of the sky. So it looks very dark.

Relish this 4 to 6 hours’ drive from Kashgar to Karakul Lake with few equally magnificent lakes like “Sand” or “Corner” Lake to greet eager visitors. This lake is turquoise in color and has beautiful snow-capped peaks around it. The most stunning feature is “Sand Mountain” directly across the lake from the highway. It is literally an expansive sand dune – and at over 11,000 feet elevation. Karakul Lake is the gem, of course. There are multiple glaciers that reach down to within 1,000 feet of the lake. Muzagh Mountain is at the right end of the lake and is 25,000 feet in elevation. K2 is just a little bit further away.

Shipton's Arch
Forget all those other arches you might have seen in the States or so - this here is the most surprising - Shipton's Arch measured at 457m (roughly 1,500ft), the arch could theoretically fit the Empire State Building.

Probably the world's tallest natural arch. Though long familiar to locals, it was famously visited in 1947 by English mountaineer Eric Shipton during his tenure as the British consul in Kashgar – and made known to the West in his book Mountains of Tartary. It was only as recently as May 2000 that an expedition sponsored by National Geographic rediscovered the arch for foreigners
It´s an easy walk of one and a half hours (one way) from the trailhead at the parking lot and "museum" through an impressive gorge ending in front of an more than 350 m high arch

Before all the above, our trip actually commence from Turpan in Urumqi, the gateway!

Turpan, the grape valley- the fertile oasis you simply will not want to miss. It is the capital city of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region
There is the famous folk song : “Turban` s grapes are ripe; Anarthan`s heart is ecstatic…. ” . Thanks for the dry and hot climate in Turban, which makes the grapes juicy and sweet. Various kinds of grapes are planted here, including the white grape, red grape, black grape, the mares nipple grape and among all those grapes the white grape without seeds are the most welcomed by visitors. Other yummy fruits, such as melons, peaches, apples, pears, also prevail in Turpan.
You'll be delighted to find yourself reveling in vineyards surrounding you at the place we reside!

Flaming Mountain
Heard about the legend of flaming mountain and the Monkey King? Long long ago, the Monkey King knocked down the furnace while stirring up trouble in Heaven. Finally charcoals fell into Turpan and “Flaming Mountain” was formed. Actually, it was the result of tectonic plate movement 50000000 years ago. Temperature in the mountain can soar higher than 50 degrees.
