Who's going?

Laos, with its neighbouring countries of Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Myanmar and China, has a rich history stretching back 10,000 years. And yet, today it is still untouched by the modern demands. Its beauty lies in the laid-back and friendly Lao people, century-old traditions and heritage, and its landlocked, lush and pristine landscape. These attribute to a perfect place for a short break from the hustle and bustle developed city life for a unique experience post Chinese New Year.

Besides visiting Luang Prabang - a listed UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995 due to its outstanding cultural and natural features, we will also explore off the beaten track city of Phonsavan. It was one of the most heavily bombed area in Laos, and that's saying something that make Laos the most heavily bombed country in the world. Today the region remains littered with unexploded ordinance (UXO).

After which, we will head to Vang Vieng, one of the most popular outdoor activities destinations on the South East Asia trail, to indulge in our own adventure activities.

LUANG PRABANG-THE WORLD HERITAGE TOWN

In the Luang Prabang, there are 2 places to visit: Tha Pak Ou Caves and Tad Kuang Si Waterfall

Tha Pak Ou Caves are among the most revered holy sites in Laos. It is a sanctuary built by the Lao people for hundreds of years with more than 4000 Buddha sculptures deposited there over centuries.

It sits amongst the limestone cliffs where the Mekong and Nam Ou rivers meet. The caves are spilt in two: Tham Ting cave and Tham Theung cave.

Laos may be a landlocked nation without beaches, but its waterfalls make up for it.

Kuang Si Waterfall is the biggest in the Luang Prabang area. The breath-taking cascades with three tiers of water leading to a 50-metre drop into spectacular pools before flowing downstream, makes Kuang Si one of Luang Prabang’s most popular tourist attractions.

The pools, in turquoise colour make great swimming holes. If you do not fancy swimming, you could relax under the shade created by the surrounding lush tropical jungle watching others having fun jumping in and out of the water.

PHONSAVAN

It is well known as the site of the mysterious Plain of Jars. The Plain of Jars is a group of fields containing thousands of stone jars cut out from rock thousands of years ago.

The history of the stone jars is shrouded in mystery. They come in varying sizes up to three meters high, weighing up to several tons. Most of them were sculpted from sandstone rock. Little is known about the people that constructed the megalithic stone jars.

Several theories and legends exist about the purpose of the jars. One local legend claims the jars were constructed to distill an alcoholic brew to celebrate a victorious military campaign over an ancient king.

Another tells that they were made by a race of giants to use as cups to drink rice wine. And yet another says the jars were used to store water for the dry season. However, archaeological evidence suggests that the jars are ancient funerary urns, carved by Bronze Age people around 2,000 years ago though the origin of these enormous jars is unclear, inciting international debate.

Based on the Plain of Jars' extraordinary heritage, the Lao Government is preparing a nomination dossier for a submission to the UNESCO World Heritage Centre to inscribe the area as a World Heritage Site.
